Building Administrators and teachers use the Book Bag to hold books that you want to:
- recommend to students (teachers and Building Administrators only)
- add to a new or existing assignments
- add to your favorites
Adding Books to Your Book Bag
As you find or browse through books in the Library, when you find a book that you want to add to the Book Bag, select Assign.
You can also select the Book Bag button in the book information window.
When you add the first book to the Book Bag from the book cover or list views, it will open on the right. If you want to open more books, select Close to close it. As you add more books to the Book Bag, you'll see a copy of the cover move up and to the right.
When you're ready to see the Book Bag again, go to the top of the page and select the Book Bag icon on the right. The icon shows the number of books in the Book Bag. The Book Bag will open, and you'll see all the books you have added.
Recommending Books in the Book Bag to Students
Once you have added books to your Book Bag, you can recommend them to your students. Note: Once you finish recommending the books, they will be cleared from your Book Bag.
Select Recommend to Students at the bottom of the window.
Students will see the books you recommend for 30 days by default. If you want to set a different end date for the book recommendations, type the date in the "Recommend until" field. The end date can be up to 90 days from the current date.
Next, find and check the students that you want to recommend the books to.
If you are a teacher, your roster is shown by default, and you can check any of the students in your class, click Select All to check all of the students, or click Unselect All to uncheck all students.
If you want to recommend the book to a specific student and the list is long, it may be faster to search for the student in the list to find the student more quickly.
To confirm which students have been selected, select the number to the right of the "Students Selected" heading. This opens the selected students in another window, where you can choose to deselect some. After reviewing the list, select Cancel to close the window without saving changes or Accept to save any changes you've made before closing the window.
If you prefer to recommend the books to students in a specific group, select the My Groups tab. On that tab, use the drop-down list to select the group, then check students.
If you are a Building Administrator, instead of the My Roster tab, you'll see My Building and My Teachers tabs. The My Building tab lets you recommend books by grade; use the drop-down list to choose the grade. The My Teachers tab lets you recommend books to students of a specific teacher; use the drop-down list to choose the teacher. You will also see a My Groups tab that lets you choose a group as teachers do. Once you've chosen a tab and a grade, teacher or group, select the students that you want to recommend books to.
When you select Recommend to Students, the books will be removed from your Book Bag and will appear for your students. Students will see a section on their opening myON page with the books and who recommended them. Each student can decide whether to read the recommended books. Recommended books stay in this group until the end date you selected or until the student reads them.
Adding Books in the Book Bag to Assignments
Once you have added books to your Book Bag, you can add the books to an assignment. Note: Once you finish adding the books to an assignment, the books will be cleared from your Book Bag.
Select Create Assignment at the bottom of the window.
In the window that opens, you have two choices:

Create a New Assignment creates a brand new assignment that incudes the books in your Book Bag. If you select this option, enter a name for the new assignment.

Add to an Existing Assignment lets you add the books to an assignment that you have already created. Select the drop-down list to choose the assignment. Both active assignments and drafts are listed.
When you select Add, the books will be added to the assignment, and you will go to the page for that assignment.
Adding Books in the Book Bag to Your Favorites
To add a book in your Book Bag to your favorites, simply select Favorite for that book. The icon will change to show a check mark in the heart, and the word will change to "Favorited." Adding a book to your favorites does not remove the book from your Book Bag.
Removing Books from the Book Bags
Books are removed from your Book Bag automatically when you recommend them or add them to assignments. If you would like to remove books at other times, do one of the following:
- To remove an individual book, select Remove.
- To remove all books in the Book Bag, select Clear at the top.
